It’s Almost Christmas!

Where has the year gone?  It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the start of 2015!

The weather this past week at Manycorners Headquarters has been unseasonably warm. Today was a little colder, but it’s supposed to warm up in the next few days, so (probably) no chance of a white Christmas this year.

Happy Winter Solstice and Seasons Greetings to you and yours.

The Second Sunday of August

Today is eight-one.  “Ate one” what?

Cookies?

Apples?

Mm… doughnuts?

Bagels?

Carrots?

This could go on forever.

August was  great time for me when I was younger. The state fair had just ended. (Loved the fireworks and the midway rides.)  In the 60s, my grandmother would enter something in almost every home event; she loved crocheting, sewing, baking, canning. Can’t forget her flower garden and her competing with the neighbor across the street for the best looking flowers.

The second Sunday of August was our family reunion (father’s side). We would all pile in the car and head up north to the big city of Wilmington, Delaware. At first the reunions were held at Aunt Harriet’s house, but as the extended family grew, the reunions were moved to Brandywine State Park.

After fun and games and a big lunch, we would head over to the the big department stores that (at the time) only the “big city” would have: Gaylords, Almart, and of course Wilmington Dry Goods.

My aforementioned grandmother would always seek out the yard goods (sewing) department. I thought she meant she was looking for outdoor furniture.

My brothers and I would go look at the back-to-school supplies. It was a big deal to have a binder and/or a lunch box that was bought in the “big city”! What can I say? I grew up in a small town in slower Delaware!

The family reunions came to an end in the early seventies as the elder relatives started passing away and the New Jersey relatives no longer wanted to trek down to Wilmington.

But hey, in the early seventies,  Wilmington Dry Goods opened a store in Dover, so who needed to trek to the “big city”?!

As for the other weeks in August back in the 60s, I would spend one week with my (aforementioned) grandmother, then a week with my other grandmother (she lived in Maryland so it was great to say I went out of state on my summer vacation).  Then as the summer wound down it was time to get ready to go back to school. Today, as I look back on times gone by, I remember the innocence of it all and smile.

Spring is Almost Summer! It’s Gardening Time at Manycorners Headquarters!

The weekend is finally here! Time to put together my balcony flower garden. Since I live in an apartment that faces west/southwest, I need to work with plants that are suitable for full afternoon sun.

I visited the local home improvement store earlier this week to select plants. I felt like a kid in a candy store! So many plants to choose from. Lots of lovely colors! Which plants should I buy? Since I’m a girl on a budget and have limited space to plant, here is what I selected:

I miss the local garden and landscaping center. It closed last summer; houses are now being built in their space. It was a great place to visit. It had a parklike setting (my husband enjoyed going there with me). I would always want to spend hours there since they carried a large variety of garden plants. To show off their landscaping skills, they had a koi pond, working fountains, and a backyard/patio setting that added to the peacefulness. But I digress. Back to the task at hand.

After tidying up the balcony from the winter winds, I’m ready to pot the plants.

Here is where the planting action takes place:

Pots at the ready, too:

Time to pot these lovely plants. Which plants in which pots? Here are the final results:

Voila! The plants, they are potted!

I also have flower boxes that hang from the balcony railing so I put some plants in them, too.

These flower boxes have seen a lot of action over the years!

There is one less pot to be planted (sounds like a line from a song). This is a Hybrid Lily (Lilium Asiatic ‘Orange Pixie’) that I purchased a few years ago. I must be doing something right, because it keeps coming back!

Well, time to water the plants. Until next time, I remain… Manycorners!

The Saga of Little Jack Horner: An Introduction to the Many Corners of Manycorners

“Little Jack Horner sat in the corner,” begins the famous nursery rhyme, but for us here at the Many Corners of Manycorners, we wonder in which corner Little Jack Horner was actually sitting. Was he in his Christmas corner eating his Christmas pie, or was he in his cooking corner, baking another pie? Or, possibly, was he in his time out corner for making a mess in the kitchen?

In our world, there are many, many corners in which one can play, in which one can garden, cook, clean, sew, crochet, cross-stitch, or even nap. The possibilities are endless! All of that corner work can certainly cause a person to get tuckered out and need a bit of a snooze!

Here in our world, we will present you with our view of the corners in which we play every day. But for now, let us leave you with a picture of perhaps our favorite corner, the corner in which everything is possible: a sunny day. Here, a playful kitty has had a happy day and needs a little shut-eye. He is in his napping-in-the-sunshine corner and he is very content! Bye for now!
